What did you notice about your learning when you listened to the Soundcloud by Howat? How was it different from reading an article?

I did enjoy listening to the Soundcloud, but I found that my eyes kept moving around because there was nowhere to look. If there were visuals or graphics to go along with the audio, I think it would have been easier to stay focussed. When comparing to an article, it is the exact opposite of listening to this Soundcloud or a podcast, and each method is only part of the dual coding theory. Personally, I would go for the article over a recording because I am more of a visual learner:)

Below is the sketch note I attempted for one of my lectures (HLTH 251) who had a guest lecture. I am not really good at drawing so I wrote more than sketched, but overall I liked how I could organize the ideas in my own way. One of Mayer’s theory’s I think is involved is the Coherence principle, because we write notes (usually) on what we think will be the most important.

    Hey Olivia,
I appreciated your input about the SoundCloud audio. I also get incredibly distracted when listening to audio files without any visualization. I wondered if some people also get distracted by visualizations when listening to audio files. My sister, for example, hates reading subtexts when watching movies because she finds it to be a form of distraction. Do you find that you prefer audio-visual media to just visual media? Furthermore, how do you think this affects your learning style?

Hi Olivia! You did a great job with your sketchnote! I noticed you also used the signaling principle which was a great way to highlight and emphasize on key ideas/headings. I’m also not the best at drawing so I understand the struggle! If it helps I suggest to potentially paste in already made drawings to help with engagement in your sketchnote! https://www.flaticon.com/ has been a great resource for me. Otherwise, the way you organized your notes was well done! Based on your experience, do you think you’ll continue using sketchnotes? I discovered that visually seeing how concepts connect with each other has been a huge help in the past

Hey Olivia, great job with your post. I really enjoyed reading it! I really liked how you explained your experience with Soundcloud. I don’t think I’ve ever used Soundcloud before, but I know exactly what you mean, getting distracted listening to just the audio. It definitely takes time to get used to listening to audio recordings, although it’s an excellent method to practice your listening skills. I see that you’ve attempted sketchnoting and done mostly writing rather than drawing. Something you should try is drawing out your notes more; that would be more beneficial in terms of retaining information and allowing you to respond to complex ideas through your drawings. It’s totally okay if your drawings aren’t pristine; the awesome thing is that you can express the information you give through your own interpretation! Overall, awesome work this week with your post! (Sorry for the two comment posts, I accidentally posted it on the wrong page!)

Hi Olivia, I totally agree with your idea, I think in learning, whether it is words, images, sounds or pictures, they should all be used together rather than appearing alone. The single form also makes it difficult for me to concentrate for a long time. Moreover, this is also a principle proposed by Mayer, R. E. in his book The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning. I also like your sketchnotes very much. It looks very clear and easy to understand. Learning sketchnoting has also helped me a lot in my daily study. It makes it easier for me to think of what I have learned.
